Mary and Carla, known as the Smiley Twins, are entrepreneurs and Nashville natives who turned their passion for innovation into a thriving business and have expanded their business to over 100 independently owned locations across nine states.
What Businesses Do You Run?
Mary and Carla, better known as the Smiley Twins, began with traditional brick-and-mortar med spas. Today, they operate over 100 independently owned and operated med spas across nine states, offering the flexibility of a franchise without the franchise label. These locations are constantly growing as they push into new markets, solidifying their presence and extending their reach.
How Did You Get Started as an Entrepreneur?
Mary’s journey into entrepreneurship was fueled by her experience in corporate America. Working at HTA, she faced the challenges many professionals encounter: limited autonomy, capped earning potential, and a rigid structure that left little room for innovation. When the opportunity arose to branch out on their own, Mary and Carla seized it. They saw the chance to escape the confines of corporate life and create something entirely their own. Entrepreneurship allowed them to establish their own culture, define their values, and build a company where both employees and leaders could thrive.
How Do You Think About Growth in Your Current Business? How Do You Plan for the Future?
For Mary and Carla, growth is about more than just adding locations—it’s about staying ahead of the curve. They emphasize the importance of technology in driving their business forward. "In today’s world, you can’t be in any space—whether it’s yoga or a physical trade—without understanding how to integrate technology," they explain.
From mastering social media to leveraging tools that boost efficiency, the Smiley Twins are always exploring new ways to innovate and scale their business. Their vision for the future involves not just expanding into more states but also continuously refining their processes and strengthening their company culture.
What Advice Do You Have for Aspiring Entrepreneurs?
Mary and Carla offer empowering advice for those considering entrepreneurship: don’t wait for perfection—start now. "We waste so much time preparing and worrying about things like having the perfect bank account or LLC. Instead, take the first step. Test your idea in the market and let the feedback guide you forward," they suggest.
They also stress the importance of seeking honest, unbiased feedback. While friends and family might encourage you, it’s essential to ask strangers for their thoughts on your idea.
“Your idea doesn’t have to be perfect, and you don’t have to do it all alone. Find the right partner to help you bring your vision to life”
