How did you get started as an entrepreneur?

Jessica's entrepreneurial journey began in 2016 with the launch of Jessica Dokes Interior Design. Her lifelong passion for design fueled her desire to create her own business. As a child, she enjoyed rearranging furniture and decorating her friends' homes, a love that naturally evolved into her first venture. This foundation in design continues to influence her work with candles, where aesthetic and sensory experiences merge.

How do you think about growth in your current business? How do you plan for the future?

For Jessica, growth is driven by her passion and commitment. She believes in giving 110% to everything she enjoys, and that intensity shapes her approach to The Black Candle Company. Each product and scent is carefully crafted, and the brand’s expansion into services reflects her dedication to offering a comprehensive experience for customers. Jessica remains focused on understanding market trends and customer preferences, allowing her to adapt and innovate as she plans for the future.

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?

Jessica’s advice for those looking to step into entrepreneurship is straightforward: "Just do it." While this may sound cliché, she emphasizes the importance of acting on ideas as soon as they arise. Many people get bogged down in perfecting every detail, only to find someone else has already launched a similar venture. She encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to take that leap, while also being smart and protective of their ideas.

Having faced rejection and closed doors herself, Jessica reminds others that setbacks are part of the journey. "You will move on. You will continue to breathe." Her core message is clear: if you’re passionate about something, embrace it fully and take that leap. Just do it.

Don’t let the fear of rejection hold you back—if you’re passionate about it, just go for it!

Jessica. So my name is Jessica Bobbit dokes, and I'm the owner, curator and CEO of the Black Candle Company. We are a luxury home fragrance collection that specializes in affordable luxury. We offer a collection of simple, minimal, modern, labelless candles, room sprays, pretty much anything you need to scent the home. And with that, we have 10 different captivating scents that each tell their own story, and 14 different products. And not only are we a product based business, but we also have services as well, such as wholesale private label candle making classes and then a service called synth the event. So how I got started as an entrepreneur in 2016 was actually my first introduction to entrepreneurship, I started a company called Jessica dokes interior design. So what really drove me opening that company was my passion for design. When I was younger, I used to go from my friend's house and I would rearrange furniture and, you know, try to decorate. So that was really my driving force behind opening up that initial company. And I say to this day that company actually kind of flows into what I do with my candle business. From a design perspective, really, what inspired me to pursue entrepreneurship is just my passion. I've always been the type of person if I really enjoy doing something, like, I give it 110% like, I just really, you know, go full force into it. And so when I was doing the interior design, you know, anytime my friends or, you know, just people that would I would randomly meet if they would ask about my company, like I had no problem talking about it. And I loved taking on projects, giving advice to someone, you know, stepping into entrepreneurship, I would say, Just do it. I know it sounds so cliche, but once you come up with that idea, just go ahead and start acting on it. Because a lot of times we find ourselves, you come up with this amazing idea, and then you're like, Oh, let me, let me sit here and try to fine tune every detail about it. And then you look up and somebody else has the business, and they're already taken off with it. So go ahead and jump into it. And you know, of course, protect yourself in the process and be smart about it, but just do it like you're gonna you're gonna have a lot of people that are gonna tell you, knows, I've had plenty of doors slammed in my face. It's okay, you know, you will, you will go on. You will continue to breathe. So just, just continue on. If you're passionate about it and you enjoy it, just do it.
